This Mexican-American grew up in a tough neighbourhood, and learning self-defence was essential. He spent time learning karate and aikido before switching to Sambo. A high school dropout, he debuted as a professional in 2001.
A champion in his second fight, this youngster signed with the UFC after dominating IFC fights in his division. His debut with them came at UFC 44.
