The young aspiring footballer grew up in Liverpool idolizing star striker Robbie Fowler of Liverpool Football Club. How he ended up playing in the exact opposite spectrum of the pitch to his hero remains quite a mystery to this day. He started his footballing career with Tranmere Rovers' youth system before signing his first professional contract with them in July 2008. His performances would see his stock rise and soon multiple Championship sides were vying for his signature. In June 2011 Ipswich Town beat out fierce competition to secure his services. He made 130 appearances for Ipswich Town over 3 years winning their 'Supporters Player of the Year Award' in 2012. Steady and consistent performances with Ipswich Town made Premier League sides take notice of the defender and in July 2014 West Ham United signed him to a five year contract. A few months later he'd go on to score his first goal for the club in front of their home supporters in a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the Boleyn Ground. The Englishman became a regular feature in the first team and made an outstanding 47 appearances, the highest of any West Ham player in the 2015-16 campaign, featuring in 37 out of a possible 38 fixtures in the Premier League. He earned his first England cap against Spain at Wembley Stadium in November 2016.
