Player Bio
Waino was born in Brunswick, Georgia, on August 30, 1981. He is a Major League Baseball pitcher who pitches for the St. Louis Cardinals. This three-time All-Star went to Glynn Academy in Brunswick, where he excelled in both athletics and academics. He also played football, earning a place in the All-State team as a wide receiver and All-Region honours as a placekicker during his junior and senior years. In the first round of the 2000 MLB draft, the Atlanta Braves selected Waino 29th overall. The young man skipped college in favour of a professional career, signing a deal that included a $1.25 million bonus. He reported to their rookie club before being assigned to the Atlanta Braves' Class A Danville Braves in the Appalachian League. He later joined the South Atlantic League's Macon Braves. After that, he played in the Carolina League. This three-time All-Star also played for Greenville, the Braves' Double-A affiliate. Waino was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals in December 2003. After spending time with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds and playing in the AFL, he was given his MLB debut by the Cardinals on September 11, 2005. A World Series champion in 2006, this player has remained with them since.
