The Ukrainian started his footballing career with the Chernihiv youth system but moved around to a number of youth academies based in Kyiv. His first big move came in 2006 when he signed for Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv, where upon signing he was compared to Ukrainian goal machine and former world player of the year Andrei Shevchenko. The hitman didn't disappoint scoring 147 goals and bagging 90 assists in 347 appearances for the club over a decade. His performances caught the eye of German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund who acquired his services in August 2017. His time in Germany was not as successful as one would expect, he featured 18 times for Dortmund scoring 3 goals. West Ham United came in for his services the following season, The Ukrainian hitman put pen to paper in July 2018 which tied him to the club for the next 4 years. His debut season was cut short by injury when he suffered an achilles in October in a game against Tottenham Hotspur. He made his international debut against Andorra in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying round. He scored his first hat-trick for his country away to Luxembourg in UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers, later he also went on to score in Ukraine's playoff victory against Slovenia securing qualification in the Euro 2016 finals.
