The robust box-to-box midfielder drove around in a Bentley during his days in France with Paris Saint-Germain.

Born Toulouse, France, he had a nomadic youth career beginning at the age of six, spanning five different clubs in his homeland: US Fontenay-sous-Bois, CO Vincennois, INF Clairefontaine, Créteil, and Troyes. On 23 November 2004, the Frenchman made his professional debut for Ligue 2 as Troyes triumphed 2-1 over Gueugnon. The following season, Matu began to play regularly for the first-team, and made 31 appearances in Ligue 1, helping Troyes narrowly avoid relegation. On 12 July 2007, he declined the advances of a host of Ligue 1 clubs and signed for AS Saint-Étienne on a four-year deal. The French midfielder featured in 154 competitive games for Les Verts, earning plaudits for his displays in defensive midfield. His unique blend of robust defending and lighting counter-attack transitions earned him a move to Paris Saint-Germain, the club he supported as boy, in the summer of 2011. Thus began the most successful phase of his career; 295 appearances, 33 goals and 30 assists, and a countless number of tackles and interceptions, paved the road as PSG dominated the domestic scene, raking in multiple Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue and Trophée de Champions. With France conquered, Matu moved to Italy for a fresh challenge, signing for Serie A giants Juventus ahead of the 2017/18 campaign. His debut season was a successful one as Juve claimed the Serie A and Coppa Italia double. On the international scene, he has represented France on over 80 occasions, and was a part of the 23-man squad that lifted the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
