Born in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Catalonia, he started his career in the youth ranks of FC Barcelona as a left winger, but was released on account of being too small in 2005. After a short spell in Cornellà, he signed for Valencia CF in 2007. Alba made his La Liga debut for Los Che on 13 September 2009, in a 4-2 win over Real Valladolid. It is during this period at Valencia under the guidance of coach Unai Emery that the winger would be transform into his position of full-back. In the 2010/11 season, the Spaniard played almost exclusively as a right-back, making 27 league appearances as Valencia finished third in the league table. During his three year spell at the Mestalla, he featured 110 times for Els Taronges, scoring 6 goals and providing 8 assists. On 28 June 2012, he signed a five-year contract to return to his boyhood club FC Barcelona for a fee of €14 million, making his debut on 19 August, playing the full 90 minutes in a 5-1 win over Real Sociedad. The full-back scored his first goal for the Blaugrana on 20 October 2012, opening the scoreline in a 5-4 win against Deportivo de La Coruña. He cemented his place as Barça's first choice left-back and has since appeared in 301 games, scoring 15 goals and bagging 57 assist. On the international stage he has 69 appearances for Spain, with 8 goals and 11 assists under his belt. The Spaniard's trophy cabinet reflects his great success with both Barcelona and Spain, he has to his name: 5 La Liga (2012/13, 2014/15, 2015/16, 2017/18, 2018/19); 4 Copa del Rey (2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18); UEFA Champions League (2014/15); FIFA Club World Cup (2015); FIFA World Cup (2010); UEFA European Championship (2012).
