Born in Kragujevac, Serbia, the midfielder began his career with hometown club Radnički Kragujevac of the Serbian West League, after a single season he made his way to Serbian top-tier club Fudbalski klub Rad to play as a right-sided midfielder. After four years and 54 appearances with Rad the midfielder moved to Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade on December 2011, winning the Serbian Cup in his debut season. The midfield dynamo would be on the move again after a season-and-a-half, this time to Belgian Pro League club Anderlecht, winning the Belgian Pro League and Belgian Super Cup in his only season with the club. Next it was off to Super-league Greece with Greek giants Olympiacos C.F.P., the man from Serbia scored 15 goals in 94 appearances, winning back-to-back Super-league Greece in the 2014/15 & 2015/16 season as well as the Greek Football Cup in 2014/15. On 31 January 2017, English Premier League club Crystal Palace reached a deal with Olympiacos for the services of the Serbian midfielder for a fee €16 million, the Serb signed on a three-and-a-half year contract and scored his first goal with a penalty kick in a 3-0 win over Arsenal; his second came in a 4-0 home over Hull City at Selhurst Park, securing The Eagles' place in the Premier League and relegated the opponents. The Serbian midfielder was Palace's top scorer with 10 goals the following season, developing a reputation for taking stone-cold penalties by scoring 9 of 10 taken, as Crystal Palace recovered from a poor start to finish in eleventh position. In two-and-a-half season with The Eagles the Serb has 24 goals in 93 appearances.
