Born in Vienna to a Serbian father and Austrian mother, the fiery forward began his career playing for local side Floridsdorfer AC in 1995. During his youth, behavioural issues - which would plague him through out his career - saw him switch as many as 6 clubs in a span of 12 years. He signed his first professional contract for Dutch side FC Twente in 2006, and made his professional debut against PSV Eindhoven in April 2007. His breakthrough came in the 2008-09 season, where 41 appearances saw him net 14 goals helping FC Twente finish second in the Dutch Eredivisie and reach the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup. After an unsuccessful loan spell in Italian football with Internazionale, in June 2010 the Austrian signed for Werder Bremen of Germany in a 4 year deal. In the 84 appearances that followed, he bagged 16 goals and 13 assists, including a hat-trick away at Hoffenheim. The summer of 2013 saw him join English Premier League outfits Stoke City. During his time with the Potters he made 145 appearances, registering 26 goals and 32 assists. 12 of his 26 goals came in the 2015-16 campaign, which saw him finish as the clubs top scorer with match winning goals against defending champions Chelsea, Manchester City, and a stoppage time penalty against Everton which he won and converted to give Stoke City the win at Goodison Park. Towards the end of his tenure with the Potters, the Austrian forward was vocally criticized by the home fans for submitting a transfer request to the club expressing his intentions to leave. A club record fee of £20 million saw the Viennese born frontman sign for fellow Premier League club West Ham United in the summer of 2017. Playing under manager David Moyes who has shifted him from a wide player in to a more central role has helped Austrian forward attain the best goal to game ratio of his career. In the summer of 2019 he choose to move to China to join Shanghai SIPG. In the summer of 2021 he made the move to Bologna, in the Italian Serie A.
