Born in Den Bosch, Netherlands, the Dutchman spent his youth career with local side FC Den Bosch before joining PSV's academy in 2005, a few years later he moved to England to join Chelsea's youth system in 2007. The defender would make his professional debut on 9 August 2009 in a 2-1 win over Ipswich Town while on loan at EFL Championship side Coventry City. On 24 March 2010 the defender made his debut for Chelsea as a second half substitute in 5-0 away win at Portsmouth, three days later he'd make his home debut, again as a substitute, in a 7-1 win over Aston Villa. The Dutchman would return to his homeland on loan with Eredivisie side SBV Vitesse, scoring 7 and assisting 10 goals in 84 appearances over the course of three seasons. On 25 July 2014, the Dutchman departed Chelsea for fellow Premier League club Sunderland, joining the Black Cats on a four-year deal for a fee of £2 million. He made his debut in a 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion on 16 August 2014, and in the next two-and-a-half seasons made 95 appearances for the Black Cats, chipping-in with 9 goals and assists apiece. On 30 January 2017 the Dutchman made the switch to South London club Crystal Palace for a fee of £14 million, he signed on a four-and-a-half year deal and made his debut in a 2-0 win over AFC Bournemouth a day after his arrival. He made 28 appearances in his second season at the club and established himself as a starter in the 2018/19 season, forming part of a backline that kept 12 clean sheets as Palace finished mid-table.
