Player Bio

Born in Mojkovac, SFR Yugoslavia, he started his career at the youth academy of local side Brskovo before moving to BSK Borča in 2007 to complete his development. In 2010 he was signed by Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade; the defender made 28 competitive appearances, helping the secure a domestic double of the Serbian Superliga and Serbian Cup. He was scouted by Manchester City during Partizan’s UEFA Champions League showings; the English club signed the up-and-coming defender for a fee of £6 million in the summer of 2011. Despite showing promise, the Serbian never found a consistent run of form for The Citizens; despite City’s 2011/12 Premier League triumph, in which the Serb featured 11 times, he was deemed surplus to requirements at the end of the season. On 31 August 2012, Serie A club ACF Fiorentina signed the Serbian hard-man; he made his debut on 7 October, in a 1-0 victory over Bologna. The defender would go on to resurrect his career in Florence, establishing himself as the first-choice centre-back at the heart of Fiorentina’s backline; he made 108 appearances, helping La Viola to 4th place finishes in each of his three seasons at the club. On 20 July 2015, the Serb moved to Spain to join Atlético Madrid; after filling in a bit-part role initially, he became the club’s go-to central defender after the departure of Diego Godin and Lucas Hernandez. He has made 136 appearances for Los Rojiblancos, featuring in the defence as the club went on to win 2017/18 UEFA Europa League and 2018 UEFA Super Cup.
