Born in Bree, Belgium, he graduated from the youth academy of KRC Genk in 2009. Ahead of the 2010/11 league campaign, still a teenager, he was installed as the club’s first-choice goalie. He repaid their faith by keeping 14 clean sheets in 40 league fixtures, leading to the Genk’s triumph in the league. He was awarded Goalkeeper of the Year and Genk’s Player of the Year award for his efforts. In July 2011, the Belgian moved to England to sign for Premier League club Chelsea on a five-year deal. Immediately after, he was loaned out to Spanish powerhouse Atlético Madrid. In the Spanish capital, the Belgian goalie announced himself to the world stage; over 3 seasons and 154 appearances he kept an incredible 76 clean sheets, on route to two Zamora trophies (awarded to the goalkeeper with lowest goals-to-game ratio), which propelled the club to their first La Liga (2013/14) trophy in 17 years. In addition Atlético also won the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League, 2012/13 UEFA Super Cup, and the 2012/13 Copa del Rey. Upon his return to England, the Belgian was installed as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper. The Octopus’ domination between the sticks continued, his 58 clean sheets in 154 appearances guided Chelsea to two (2014/15, 2016/17) Premier League titles and an FA Cup (2014/15). In the summer of 2018 he completed a move back to Spain, signing for giants Real Madrid on a six-year contract. The Octopus won the 2018 FIFA World Cup Golden Glove award as Belgium reached the World Cup semi-final in Russia.
