Born in Birmingham, England, he had a troubled childhood, with both him and his mother suffering abuse at the hands of his father, who worked as a drug dealer in the neighbourhood. After failing a trial with Aston Villa due to disciplinary issues he left school at the age of fourteen and begun training as a bricklayer, earning £120 a week, and joined Chelmsley Town. It was there he was scouted by Walsall's Head of Youth Mick Halsall. Upon impressing on trial he signed of the EFL Two side on 18 December 2006. He scored his first competitive goal for Walsall in a 2-1 win over Millwall on September 2007. Over his four season tenure with The Saddlers he played in 123 games and scored 27 goals, with 14 of them coming in his final season at the club, for which he was awarded Walsall Player of the Year. On 6 August 2010, he signed for EFL Championship club Watford for a fee of £500,000, making his debut on the same day, coming on as a substitute in a 3-2 win against Norwich City. He made 205 EFL Championship appearances over five seasons for The Hornets, growing in stature with every passing season, scoring a total of 77 goals and 33 assists. He was awarded Watford Player of the Year and Watford Players' Player of the Year in the 2013/14 season for his outstanding performances. The Englishman was named Watford captain ahead of the 2014/15 season and helped the club win promotion to the Premier League by finishing as runner-up in the EFL Championship. On 8 August 2015, the Englishman made his Premier League debut in a 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park. Since then the striker has scored 70 goals in 142 Premier League appearances for The Hornets.
