Player Bio
This young man was born on May 30, 1990, in Smyrna, Georgia, the USA and is a starting pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies. Barry and Elaine Wheeler raised Wheels in Dallas, Georgia. His father played amateur baseball for 15 years, while his mother continued to play competitive softball after having children, even setting up a playpen in the dugout for weekend tournaments. He was the youngest of three brothers who all played baseball as a kid. Wheels went to East Paulding High School and was a baseball and basketball player. This young man was chosen sixth overall in the first round of the 2009 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft by the San Francisco Giants. Although he had committed to play college baseball at Kennesaw State, Wheels chose to sign with the Giants. He put pen to paper on August 17, 2009, a deal that included a $3.3 million signing bonus. He has played professional baseball with the South Atlantic League's Class A Augusta GreenJackets, the Class A-Advanced San Jose Giants, the Class A St. Lucie Mets, the Eastern League's Double-A Binghamton Mets, the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, and the Pacific Coast League's Las Vegas 51s. Wheels made his MLB debut in 2013 for the Mets and remained with them until 2018 before the Philadelphia Phillies signed him as a free agent in 2019.
