Born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, he began his youth career with local side Comercial EC do Barreiro before joining the youth academy of hometown club Atlético Mineiro in 2006 as a 14-year-old. His small demeanour became a hurdle early in his career due to which he was released twice from Atlético Mineiro's youth academy, but the midfielder persevered, after returning from loan from Democrata FC (a side entirely made up of Atlético Mineiro's youth products), where he scored 14 goals in 16 games to finish as top scorer he was called up to the first-team. His three years with Galo would see him make 73 appearances, scoring 16 goals and 19 assist, culminating with winning the Copa Libertadores in 2013. On August 2013 Ukrainian football club Shakhtar Donetsk announced the signing of the Brazilian midfielder on a five-year deal for a fee of €25 million. His time in Ukraine would be glittered with silverware, with a total of 157 appearances, 28 goals and 35 assists, the Brazilian magician won trophies galore including 3 Ukrainian League titles in 2013/14, 2016/17 & 2017/18, 3 Ukrainian Super Cups in 2014, 2015 & 2017, and 3 Ukrainian Cups on the trot in 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18. Everton manager Marco Silva convinced the midfield wizard, a free agent in 2018, to join the Premier League club as the Brazilian put pen to paper on a four-year deal ahead of the 2018/19 season.
