Karina Pochettino Biography
The lives of football stars and their families are often under the microscope. The public wants to know every aspect of their life on their path of fan following. At the same time, wanting to keep a private life is a challenge.
Karina Pochettino takes her time in the limelight without taking a step back from giving it her all to be the one to cheer on her husband, Mauricio. She has been a constant support system to her husband as well as children and has made it a point to put them first.
Early Life
Born as Karina Grippaldi in Buenos Aires, there are barely any records about her personal life from when she was younger. She holds an Argentine nationality, and yet details such as her religion, even her age, are not known to the public.
She was a student of pharmacy at the City’s National University and later married Mauricio Pochettino on December 23, 1992. Being taken by the responsibilities of a supportive wife of a leading footballer, she stood by his side, cheering him on as Mauricio started his journey with the Espanyol club.
Family Life
In 1996, the couple had their first child Sebastiano, and the couple rejoiced as Mauricio and the team of Espanyol qualified for the league, the national cup, and the continental games. A few years later, Maurizio was born in 2002.
In awe of their father’s inspiring career and the sustained support of their mother, they grew up with the protective care of Karina while inculcating the values of discipline that are needed to be a successful sportsperson. Without compromising on either of her roles, Karina stayed on top of things and encouraged her husband with his quickly climbing career and the childhood of their sons.
Ceaseless Support System
In January 2013, as the Argentine footballer was announced to be the first-team manager of the Southampton Premier League club, it posed a unique challenge to Mauricio.
Calling it one of the most testing periods of his life due to the adjustment, the language barrier for the native Spanish-speaking manager needed to be managed. This is just one of the challenges of having semantic and regional barriers in sports.
But, Karina had a strong head and found a way out. She went a step ahead and found him an English tutor to make sure that her husband can stay on top of the game even with language problems. If this doesn’t spell pure love and support, we aren’t quite sure what does!
The Superstitious Turn
Being a part of the support system in the life of a spouse comes with a huge responsibility. And sometimes, it might just get slightly challenging. A lot of sportspeople are known to be superstitious, but what happens when that spills over?
In 2017, Mauricio Pochettino banned Karina from attending home games to keep her from jinxing his team’s performance! For weeks, she wasn’t allowed to come to White Hart Lane, the Tottenham stadium. Mauricio even mentioned to the press that Karina was asked to stay at home to make sure that their streak doesn’t break.
Nonetheless, her support continued as she caught the games from the comfort of her home and texting her husband. In that season, when his team was playing against Everton, things hadn’t been looking good through halftime. The game ended with a 3-2 win for the Spurs, and Mauricio reaches home to Karina giving her opinion on the plays he made. Mauricio mentioned in an interview that she tells him once, and that’s enough.
Karina has been the pillar that has the Pochettino family together by supporting and encouraging their dreams. Being the most constructive critic to her husband, she is often labeled as a born manager by Mauricio due to her amazing skills. Sebastiano pursued the career of being a sports scientist and was the first of Tottenham. Maurizio decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and signed with Tottenham scoring his first goal in October 2018 against Norwich City in the under-18 team. The latest news is that Maurizio signed with Watford in January 2021. Karina continues to affectionately cheer her family on in their endeavors towards happiness and success.
